Types of Hearing Aids:

  • Behind-the-Ear (BTE): BTE hearing aids have a portion that sit behind the ear as well as a custom ear mold. The two pieces are connected by tubing. BTE hearing aids can provide amplification for a wide degree of hearing losses and types.
  • Receiver-in-the-Ear (RITE): RITE hearing aids have a portion behind the ear, a small thin wire that follows the side of the head, and either a universal dome or custom ear mold. The RITE hearing aid is a bit more discreet than a BTE and is able to fit a wide array of hearing aid types and degrees.
  • Custom hearing aids (ITE, ITC, CIC): Custom hearing aids consist of just one piece inside the ear. There is no portion that sits behind the ear. They come in a variety of sizes and offer different features based on size.

The Hearing Aid Process

After a hearing evaluation is completed and it is determined you are a candidate for amplification, you will undergo the following process to obtain hearing aids.

Hearing Aid Evaluation: During this appointment your hearing health care professional will review your lifestyle, communication needs, esthetic preferences, and much more to select an appropriate hearing device for you. They will help you to set goals you’d like to achieve with hearing aids and provide you with realistic expectations with the use of your devices given the degree and nature of your hearing loss. We offer a wide selection of hearing aids to fit everyone’s needs and budget.

Hearing Aid Fitting: Once you and your hearing health care professional have selected a device, you will return to be fitted with them. During this appointment we will complete Real Ear Measures to ensure the hearing aid settings are specific to your individual needs. We will review how to care for the device, how to insert and remove it, and the expectations moving forward with use. Adjusting to a hearing aid takes time and consistent use. It is normal to feel a bit overwhelmed the first few days you have them.

Hearing Aid Follow Up: After wearing your hearing aids consistently for a few weeks, we will have you back for a follow up to see how things are going and to address any areas or concern you may have. We are always available by phone prior to this appointment if there are any questions or concerns.
