10 Tips: How to Communicate with Someone Who Has Hearing Loss

  • Speak clearly – not too fast, not too slow – in a normal tone of voice.
  • Get the person’s attention before you begin talking.
  • Make sure you are looking at the person when you are speaking to them.
  • Stay out of shadows, and keep light on your face while talking.
  • Show your face while talking – avoid chewing gum, drinking, or eating when talking.
  • Avoid background noise.
  • Position yourself within 3 to 6 feet of the person you are talking to.
  • Make sure you were understood – tactfully ask leading questions so you know your message got across.
  • Rephrase if they did not understand what you said.
  • Ask the listener what you can do to make the message easier to understand.
